Humane Society Releases Video of Puppy Mill Raid in Johnston

web posted September 13, 2012

JOHNSTON – The Humane Society of the United State (HSUS), who aided in the raid to shut down a alleged "puppy mill" on Tuesday morning by the Edgefield County Sheriff's Office, has released a video of the recovery of the animals. State Sen. Jake Knox is featured in the video which also shows Edgefield County Sheriff's Investigators helping to recover the dogs.

Sen. Knox is shown expressing his disgust at the condition the puppies and dogs were being confined in at the property of Callie Abel, who was arrested on seven counts of ill treatment of animals at the time of the raid.

"It's deplorable," Sen. Knox said in the video. "You don't treat animals like this. Unless you see it, you wouldn't believe it."

Kim Kelly, South Carolina state director of the HSUS says that it is important that someone who has already been convicted of similar violations should not be able to move to an adjoining county and start another operation. Abel was convicted on similar charges in Aiken County in 2005 and then moved into Edgefield County.

The Edgefield County Sheriff's Office received complaints dating back to 2009, but when inspections were made the facility was found to be acceptable. Since then the only complaints were noise related which did not grant them access to the property until the complaints that launched an undercover operation in mid July.

Evidence gathered in that investigation led to the raid and the seizure of the animals, records, and the seven arrest warrants.
