Crime Prevention Tips: Protect Your Vehicle

By Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston
web posted September 16, 2009
JOHNSTON – A vehicle is stolen every 25 seconds, will yours be next? Over one million vehicles - cars, trucks, vans, buses, motorcycles, bicycles, boats, and trailers-– are stolen each year. Vehicle theft is the number one property crime in the United States, with only 6.4 percent of the vehicles recovered.

Professional thieves can steal any vehicle – don’t make it easy.

1)    Roll up windows completely.
2)    Remove your keys from the ignition. Lock your vehicle. Take your keys with you.
3)    Park in well-lit, attended lots or garage. Leave only valet or ignition key with the attendant.
4)    Park as close as possible to an open business.
5)    Do not leave valuables laying out in the open. Place them in the trunk or glove compartment if possible.
6)    Always park with the wheels turned toward the curb.
7)    If you have a garage – use it. Close and lock your garage doors.
8)    When going out of town, if possible, remove the distributor cap or coil wire.
9)    Never leave an unattended vehicle running.
10)    When buying a vehicle, ask about anti-theft devices such as alarms, smart keys, kill switches, and locks for stereos, batteries, and gas tanks.
11)    Purchase a vehicle tracking device. If your vehicle is stolen, law enforcement agencies are able to track your vehicle.

License plates are frequently stolen from vehicles to be used on stolen vehicles for other crimes. Get in the habit of checking your plates when you drive. A few drops of solder on the bolts or blurring threads of the bolts will help will help safeguard your plates.

ATVs, Bicycles and Motorcycles

FBI statistics prove that theft is on the rise. Most bicycles, motorcycles, and ATVs (all terrain vehicles) are stolen from the home (yard, porch, garage, dorm room, etc.) Many are stolen easily because they are not locked or chained up – purchase and use a lock that is sturdy and not light weight!
The next most common targets are vehicles that are locked with lightweight cable or small dog collar-type chain that can be easily pried open.

Over the past few years several vehicles either has been stolen or attempted. We at the Johnston Police Department hope the above information will be helpful. If anyone would like additional information about protecting your vehicle, please contact the Johnston Police Department at (803) 275-2488.

The Johnston Police Department would like to thank all the citizens for helping us make our town and neighborhoods a safer and better place to live.
