Suspect arrested during manhunt still not charged in armed robbery

web posted September 20, 2008
JOHNSTON – Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said Friday that the man arrested in Thursday night’s manhunt following the second armed robbery of a local business owner returning to his home in the last few weeks has not been charged in relation to the robbery. “At this point we aren’t sure if he had anything to do with it or not,” Chief Aston said but added that, “Everything he was telling us has turned out to be a lie.”

The robbery took place as the owner of the 3-Way Food Store was walking to his nearby home on Walker Street around 10 pm when two black males dressed in dark clothing and their faces covered approached him and one of the men placed a gun to the store owner’s head and demanded money. Chief Aston said the second man may have been armed with a knife.

The man “closed his eyes” and gave the two robbers his wallet containing an undisclosed amount of cash, bank card, and other identification. The two men then fled the area on foot, police reports state.

Johnston and Edgefield Police, Sheriff’s Deputies, and State Troopers quickly began setting up a perimeter to prevent the men’s escape. While other units patrolled the area a trooper spotted 20-year-old Jarvis Jarrell Donner near the IGA on Lee Street and when the trooper tried to make contact he took off running.

While officers searched the area 911 dispatchers received a call of a home invasion on Edisto Street that turned out to be bogus. It was later discovered Donner made the call from his cell phone in an attempt to draw officers away from his hiding place atop the Carolina Machine Company building. “He made two or three calls,” Chief Aston said, “but those (officer’s) on the perimeter never left their post.”

As the Sheriff’s Bloodhound Team was tracking the suspects from the Walker Street crime scene Donner was taken into custody after officers heard a commotion around the building. The bloodhounds tracked the suspects to the area where Donner was found hiding but police have not connected him to the robbery at this time.

Chief Aston said Mr. Donner stated he ran because he did not have his ID with him and in Tennessee, where he claimed to be from, you are thrown in jail for disorderly conduct without it. However, he gave officers a false name and false information at the time of his arrest. It was only after they found his cell phone and called his wife that police discovered the truth. “He would tell us one thing and his wife would tell us the truth,” Aston said.

Donner is being held at the Edgefield County Detention Center on a felony charge of filing a false police report and it is uncertain if additional charges may be filed in the case. “Right now we just don’t know,” Chief Aston said, adding that Donner’s story “just doesn’t make sense.”

With the similar descriptions of the robbers in a spree of armed robberies recently Chief Aston said they are working on the assumption the same people are committing the crimes, but that they were not ruling out the possibility that the crimes may be unrelated.

In all but one of the recent armed robberies two black males are reported committing the crimes with only one of the men armed with a handgun and the other with a knife, mace, or posing as if he had a concealed weapon. In the last crime there were three men reported committing the robbery with only one known to have a gun.

The men are always reported wearing dark clothing and conceal their faces with their clothing or some sort of mask.

Evidence was collected at the crime scene and is being processed and compared against evidence collected from the other crime scenes.
