Johnston Police Chief Easler suspended due to SLED investigation

BREAKING STORY!

Edgefielddaily.com
web posted September 23, 2005

JOHNSTON – Mayor Dean Campbell announced Thursday that Johnston Police Chief Butch Easler has been suspended with pay due to an investigation that is underway by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED). Mayor Campbell said the investigation stems from allegations of perjury and violation of a victim’s rights on behalf of Chief Easler. Chief Easler has been the Johnston Police Chief since 1990 and has served on the force since 1985.

Mayor Campbell said Cpl. Craig Wooten has been appointed as interim chief until the investigation is complete or until the matter can be adjudicated, “Cpl. Wooten is the highest ranking officer on the force,” Mayor Campbell said. The Mayor also assured the citizens of Johnston that, “we will provide quality law enforcement,” during Chief Easler’s absence but the town felt “it was a prudent action” due to the current situation.

Presently the Johnston Police force has seven officers besides Chief Easler and there are no present plans of hiring another officer at this time. We have been unable to reach Chief Easler for comment at this writing and SLED will not comment on ongoing investigations.
