History making 1.8 million pound generator to enter Edgefield County
Friday
web
posted September 24, 2009
JOHNSTON – A massive move is taking place
that will enter Edgefield County on Friday, stay overnight, then depart
on Saturday. And when we say massive, we mean 1.8 million pounds of
generator on a trailer 28 feet wide and 300 feet long reaching a height
of 22 feet. If you think an 18-wheeler is big, think about a
576-wheeler.
The generator is being transported to Gaffney, North Carolina for
installation in a power plant.
The move is slow going and is expected to take a month to make it from
the South Carolina costal port in Jasper County to North Carolina.
After the route was laid out, the company has been working in advance
raising power lines and other logistical aspects of such a large moving
operation, the largest object to ever travel on South Carolina Roads.
The monster-moving trailer will be parked in Johnston on Highway 121
near Forrest Tire where it will stay overnight and make any repairs
before continuing its journey on Highway 121 into Saluda County on
Saturday. From there it will turning off onto Highway 178 towards
Greenwood - a left-hand turn that has many interested in seeing how it
will be accomplished.
Area law enforcement agencies will be working in conjunction with
Mammoet International, the company transporting the generator, with
traffic control along with SC Department of Transportation and area
power companies. The company is paying all the expenses incurred by
local agencies involved as they pass through each county.
Paul Winters of Johnston, who has followed the move since it began,
said he is excited about seeing the history making transport pass in
front of his house. “I’m getting ready to take a lot of pictures,” he
said.
The huge trailer, hydraulically controlled, will move at a rate between
a slow crawl and a top speed of 20 mph on a long straightaway.
Edgefield County residents will get one of the better views of the
massive undertaking as it will stay just outside Johnston overnight.
The trailer is pulled by two tractor-trailer rigs in the front and
pushed by two in the rear.
The impact on the local economy is also expected to get a boost with
the use of motels, the purchase of fuel, food, and other spending from
the crew which is expected to be between 60 and 70 people in the
caravan.
Crews will travel in front of and behind the generator to handle
repairs of any damages caused to existing property during the move.
“It’s going to be quite a sight,” Mr. Winters said, adding later it was
the biggest thing to happen in Johnston since the Circus trains used to
come to the town.
