EdgefieldDaily.com Editor subpoenaed in lawsuit involving Town of Johnston and Former Police Chief

web posted September 24, 2009
JOHNSTON – A lawsuit filed by former Police Chief Lelex “Butch” Easler is making its way through the court system with a flurry of fifteen subpoenas being served this week. Former Johnston Police Chief Lelex “Butch” Easler filed the lawsuit naming the Town of Johnston, Johnston Town Councilman Thomas “Tommy” Burton, Edgefield County Sheriff Adell Dobey, and the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office as defendants.

“I just hated it had to come to this to get the truth out,” Mr. Easler said last September during an interview. “But, if this it what it takes, that’s what it takes.” Former Chief Easler said the things that will come out during the trial “will be interesting.”

Johnston Mayor Willie Campbell has refused to comment on the lawsuit based on issues that began under the administration of former Mayor Dean Campbell and continued into his administration when the firing took place in May of 2006.

Former Police Chief Easler was placed on administrative leave with pay when it was discovered a SLED investigation was underway concerning his action involving at least two cases. The suspension was initiated by former Mayor Dean Campbell.

EdgefieldDaily.com broke the story on the suspension of Chief Easler’s tenure on September 23, 2005. He had been the Chief of Police since 1990 and had served on the Johnston Police force since 1985. A story that was later picked up by every major news media outlet in the surrounding area.

In a surprise move, EdgefieldDaily.com’s founder and Publisher Roy Blackwell was also subpoenaed for testimony in a deposition scheduled for October 7 at 1 pm. The subpoena is listed as involving the case with the Town of Johnston only.

“I’m not sure what they could possibly want from me,” Blackwell said. “Anything that I could provide as far as information regarding the case has already been published and is online for review without costing everyone involved, including my time overseeing the production of EdgefieldDaily.com.”

Mr. Blackwell had only one question for those seeking his presence for testimony, “Have they never heard of Yahoo or Google?”
