Aiken
man in jail after running from police
web
posted September 25, 2007
JOHNSTON – An Aiken man is in jail after
running from police near Johnston Saturday night. Willie James Harrison
Jr., 36, was arrested on Monday and is being held at the Edgefield
County Detention Center on charges of resisting arrest, driving under
suspension, failure to register a vehicle, operating an uninsured
vehicle, and improper display of a tag that did not belong on the car
he was driving. Harrison is said to have fought with officers when they
tried to arrest him and then fled the area.
An Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputy spotted a blue Cadillac traveling
at a slow rate of speed as it traveled southbound on Highway 121 around
10:30 Saturday night. After running the tag displayed it was discovered
the tag came back to a 1996 Volkswagen and the deputy initiated a
traffic stop. Mr. Harrison is then alleged to have exited the car and
began walking away and had to be ordered back to the car.
As addition officers arrived on the scene it was discovered that Mr.
Harrison’s drivers license was suspended and was told he was being
placed under arrest. It was then, police say, that he began fighting
with officers trying to handcuff him and was stung with a Tazer in an
effort to force him to comply with officers.
Harrison then broke free and ran into a nearby wooded area and evaded
being arrested for the time being. With Harrison’s identity known they
were able to contact him and arranged for him to turn himself in on
Monday afternoon. No bond has been set at this writing and he remains
in custody awaiting a hearing.
