JOHNSTON – Sunday morning brought some local residents to an early and unexpected awakening with the sound of sirens and fire trucks. The Budget Inn, located at 249 Lee Street in Johnston, was the scene of an apparent arson which left one room nearly gutted. When firemen arrived they were told there was somebody in the room. Firemen's attempts to open the door found mattresses and furniture piled against the door to stop entry.

Once firemen gained entry into the room the blaze was quickly extinguished and the contents of the room placed in the parking lot and found no one inside. The owner of the inn said a black female, approximately 30 to 32 years old, had checked into the room Friday afternoon. “She had only some coins for a phone call,” he said. Whoever started the fire apparently piled all the contents of the room against the door and then set them on fire and exited out a back window.

Johnston Police Officer Mathis responded to the scene as well as Edgefield County Sheriff’s Deputy Jimmy Smith. Deputy Smith said that SLED usually investigates questionable fires to determine if it was arson or not, “but when it’s pretty cut and dry like this one,” one of the Sheriff’s Department Investigators would probably assume the investigation. The woman who had rented the room was nowhere to be found.
