The Chevrolet Malibu was occupied by four individuals at the time. A nearby Sheriff’s Deputy also responded to back up the Johnston Officer. As the deputy walked by the left rear passenger’s window he noticed a strong smell of alcohol coming from the car. The particular passenger was acting “extremely nervous,” reports indicate. The Johnston Officer asked the driver for consent to search the car and she refused. The deputy walked back to his patrol car and brought out the Sheriff’s Office K-9 to do an exterior search of the vehicle after asking all the occupants to exit the car. The K-9 alerted officers to the left rear passenger door area and the trunk of the car. With the positive results from the K-9 the deputy did an interior search of the car and the K-9 alerted the deputy to a Crown Royal bag in the middle of the back seat and a black purse nearby. As the deputy was placing the K-9 back into his patrol car one woman reached into the car and grabbed the two items. The officers told the woman to leave the items where they were, and she complied. When officers search the bag they discovered a clear plastic baggie with a white powder substance inside. Also inside the bag was a set of digital scales. At that time Eric Oliver Long, 25, of Aiken, and Tamika Shante Campbell, 27, also of Aiken were placed under arrest. During a search of Mr. Long officers discovered a loaded 9 mm Ruger pistol in Mr. Long’s waistband. Also found on Mr. Long was a small baggie of a leafy substance believed to be marijuana in his pocket. Mr. Long was found to have $201 on his person and Ms. Campbell was found to have $1,080 on her. All monies and evidence was taken into custody as well. Mr. Long and Ms. Campbell were transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center and held on custody orders until warrants could be obtained. The driver and the front passenger were not charged.
