Johnston man charged with "lewd act" and sexual assault on teenage boy

web posted September 26, 2007
JOHNSTON – A Johnston man has been arrested and charged with sex crimes involving a teenage boy last week. Perry Craig Morris, 53, of Johnston Highway, Johnston was arrested last Thursday on one count each of sexual assault with the intent to commit criminal sexual conduct in the first degree and a lewd act on a child. Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said the alleged criminal acts took place at a business where Mr. Morris worked on September 17.

According to arrest warrants obtained by EdgefieldDaily.com, Mr. Morris is accused of, “intentionally and feloniously perform(ing) a lewd act upon a 16 year old victim,” without the consent of the victim. A second warrant charges that Mr. Morris did “assault with the intent to commit criminal sexual conduct with a minor in the second degree.” Both acts are alleged to have taken place at Papa’s Pizza on 524 Calhoun Street, in Johnston.

Chief Aston said the teenage boy went to the location to apply for a job when the assault is said to have taken place. Aston also stated that Mr. Morris was an employee at the business and not the owner, “He (the owner) was shocked when I told him what took place.”

After the investigation began Chief Aston said they were informed of two other victims of similar acts but would not elaborate citing the ongoing investigation. “One of them was 15 (years old) at the time,” Aston said.

Mr. Morris was released on bond  Monday. The amount of the bond was not available jailers said Tuesday.

If convicted of the charges filed to date Mr. Morris could face at least fifteen years in prison, fined, or both, and would have to file as a registered sex offender upon his release. The arrest represents only one side of the case and is not to be construed as a conviction.

Chief Aston said Mr. Morris’ case could come up in General Sessions Court by the end of the year or the early part of next year. “But it could be delayed.” Aston said additional charges would depend on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
