Johnston Officer injured in chase of wanted man web posted September 28, 2006 JOHNSTON – A Johnston Police officer on patrol spotted Maurice Lorenzo Culbreath, 19, of Brier Wood Road in Trenton, walking down Slide Hill Road Tuesday night. A second officer also responded to the location when it was confirmed that Mr. Culbreath had outstanding warrants for his arrest for drug violations. The officers spoke with Mr. Culbreath and later informed him he was under arrest. When the officer pulled out his handcuffs Mr. Culbreath broke from the officers and ran into a wooded area nearby. The officers gave chase on foot as Edgefield County Deputies and Edgefield Police began responded to the scene to help create a perimeter to keep Mr. Culbreath from escaping. During the chase, Johnston Police Officer Chad Shealey was injured. Johnston Police Chief Aston was called to the scene and assumed command of the search, at first considering calling out the Edgefield County Bloodhound team. Chief Aston said that he determined the search should be abandoned due to circumstances involved with the injured officer and the likelihood that Mr. Culbreath could be apprehended later without incident. Edgefield County EMS was called to the scene and transported Officer Shealey to the Edgefield County Hospital with an injury to his right knee. Chief Aston said he was unsure how long Officer Shealey would be off duty due to a “hairline fracture” of the knee. “Right now he (Officer Shealey) is in a lot of pain and we’re just hoping he can bounce back fairly quickly,” Chief Aston said Wednesday. Chief Aston said he did not believe the injury would require surgery to correct. “We’re just hoping for the best,” the Chief said. Chief Aston said having Officer Shealey out due to the injury would not affect police protection of the town, but would place an additional burden of other officers and himself during the recovery time. In addition to the outstanding warrants for drug charges Mr. Culbreath is facing, Chief Aston said he has been issued an additional warrant for resisting arrest against Mr. Culbreath. No arrests have been made at this writing. For
