Manhunt for Man Wanted for Attempted Murder in Johnston Friday

web posted October 6, 2012

JOHNSTON – All eyes were on Johnston Friday afternoon after a man wanted for attempted murder was spotted near downtown. Johnston Police and Edgefield County Sheriff's Deputies converged on the area in hopes of locating 24-year-old Ricky Martin Jr. who has five warrants for attempted murder hanging over his head resulting from an incident at John's Club on Saturday, September 29, around 1:30 am.

The Sheriff's Bloodhound Team was called to the scene to try to track Martin as he ran behind homes and businesses and eventually into a wooded area to avoid capture. After nearly two hours of tracking the search was called off and Martin was never located.

Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston said that officers were called to a fight at John's Club Saturday morning, which lost their license to operate due to problems but it was recently re-issued.

Chief Aston said the case is still under investigation but felony warrants have been issued for at least five other people.

According to Aston, the incident started as a dispute between two or three females when the husband of one stepped in to try to diffuse the situation. That is when others, including Martin, began attacking the woman's husband beating him to the ground and kicking him in the face and head.

After the fight was broken up, four men were trying to load the badly injured man into a vehicle when Martin is accused of getting into a second vehicle and rammed the victim and the four trying to help him between the two vehicles causing injuries to all.

Martin then fled the scene before police could arrive.

Chief Aston said at least five others are wanted on charges of assault and battery in the first degree for the initial assault, including at least one female. "We're still trying to sort the whole thing out," Chief Aston said. "There will be more arrests." Martin, however; is their primary focus because of the attempted murder charges.

Martin was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue pants at the time of the search centered around Railroad Ave, Addison St, and Lee St and all areas in between. He is a black male with dreadlocks. Height and weight were not made available for this report.

Anyone with information on Ricky Nelson Martin's location is asked to call the Edgefield County Dispatch at 806-637-5337. You do not need to provide your name to give information.
