Johnston
burglary leads to manhunt
web
posted October 18, 2007
JOHNSTON – Two men burglarizing the
Johnston IGA on Lee Street early Wednesday morning set off a manhunt
that lasted well into Wednesday afternoon that involved the Johnston
and Edgefield Police Departments as well as the Edgefield, Saluda, and
Aiken County Sheriff’s Offices. Two men threw two cement blocks through
the glass door of the IGA Food Store and took an estimated $2,600 in
cigarettes. As Johnston Police were investigating the call, an
Edgefield County Sheriff’s deputy discovered an attempted burglary at
Billy’s Superstore less than a half mile away.
The two men are then believed to have fled towards Aiken on Highway 191
in a 1994 white Cadillac. Edgefield and Saluda County Deputies and
Edgefield and Johnston Police Officers arrived on the scene in an
attempt to block the two men’s escape. Shortly before 2 am a Saluda
County Deputy spotted the car pulled off into the woods on a side road.
When the deputy shinned a spotlight on the car the two men fled on foot
into the woods.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division joined the search around 10
am with a helicopter but was unable to pinpoint either man’s location.
Authorities began setting up a perimeter in the area of Highways 191
and 19 and called in bloodhounds from Aiken and Edgefield County in an
effort to locate the suspects. The two men left the clothes they wore
in the burglary in the car along with their cell phones. After checking
surveillance tapes at the IGA and information obtained from the car
police were able to identify one of the men. Johnston Police Chief
Chris Aston said Maurice Anthony Odom, 32, of Texas Lane in Williston
SC, is wanted in connection to the crime.
“We have a warrant for him now and are trying to identify the other
subject,” Aston said. The pending charge is for burglary in the second
degree. Edgefield County Sheriff’s Chief Investigator Randy Doran said
Mr. Odom is currently out on bond from a similar burglary in Barnwell
County.
Odom is described as a black male between 5’ 10” and 6” tall weighing
approximately 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jean shorts an
orange tank top shirt, and a red or reddish dew rag on his head. Odom
is said to have tattoos on both of his arms Inv. Doran said.
Chief Aston said that additional charges could be pending in the case
as a result of the ongoing investigation and that Mr. Odom may be
related to other recent burglaries in the Johnston area.
