Johnston Police take suspected dealers off the streets

web posted October 25, 2005

JOHNSTON – The Johnston Police Department made two arrests of suspected drug dealers in the town. The firs came from an undercover operative making a drug purchase which led to a warrant for the man’s arrest. That warrant was served on Wednesday which netted another charge for the man.

The man was identified by the undercover operative as Adrian Jamaal Martin, 19, of the 200 block of Edisto Street. When arrested Mr. Martin was searched and police found a five dollar bill which contained marijuana. He was booked into the Edgefield County Detention Center on charges of distribution of crack cocaine, distribution of crack cocaine within the proximity of a school or park, and simple possession of marijuana.

The second unrelated arrest came when Johnston Police Officer Joseph Mathis received a tip that there was a man selling drugs out of his car. Officer Mathis spotted the vehicle and initiated a stop. After receiving identification from all the occupants Officer Mathis asked for permission to search the car. The owner first said, “not unless you have a warrant,” but later obliged officers.

Inside the car was found a silver container which held what was believed to be crack cocaine. The owner of the car, Willie Dukes, 35, of the 400 block of Park Avenue in Johnston, admitted that the container was his and it indeed held crack cocaine. In his defense Mr. Dukes told officers he was selling crack the night before but had not sold any on that night.

He was arrested and charged with possession of crack cocaine and booked into the Edgefield Detention Center.
