One Man Flown to Trauma Center two others injured in Collisions: One Head-On

web posted October 26, 2012

JOHNSTON – One man was seriously injured after side-swiping a woman's car and then colliding head on into an SCE&G service truck on Highway 23 around 2:30 Thursday afternoon. The crash scene blocked all traffic for nearly an hour as rescue personnel used the Jaws of Life to free the drivers of two of the cars involved. One of the cars involved was earlier reported as having a possible drunk driver heading towards Johnston from Ward minutes prior to the collisions.

The man driving an Oldsmobile Alero at the center of the wreckage had reports of bad driving in Ridge Springs and Ward before entering Johnston, according to radio traffic. A Johnston Police Officer tried to intercept the car, but it had passed before he could get into position.

The driver continued towards Edgefield when he crossed the center line just west of Lanier Road and sideswiped a woman heading towards Johnston in her white Toyota Corolla. That collision caused the Toyota to spin and ended up down an embankment in the front yard of a home.

The Driver of the Alero continued westbound without the front left tire and then slammed head on into a SCE&G Ford F150 Service truck. The driver of the Alero was trapped in the heavily damaged car with multiple injuries. He was extracted from the car and flown to the Trauma Center for treatment of leg, facial, and back injuries.

The driver of the SCE&G truck was transported by ambulance, as was the woman driving the Toyota, to a local hospital for non-life threatening injures.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision, with all indications showing the driver of the Alero at fault. At this time, speed and alcohol are believed to be contributing factors.
