Child Struck by Car Flown to Trauma Center

web posted October 29, 2012

JOHNSTON – A small child, said to be between 1 and 2 years-old, was struck by a motorist Sunday afternoon on Aiken Avenue and suffered head injuries. After Johnston Police arrived on the scene a call went out to have EMS contacted to place a helicopter en route due to the child's injuries. Johnston Police Chief said after clearing the call that he did not expect any charges to be filed in the case and labeled it as an "unfortunate incident".

"It's still under investigation," Chief Aston said. "But I don't see anything that would lead to charges against the driver or the mother at this time."

Aston said the mother had been watching the young girl and her older brother playing in the yard for some time and stepped inside for just a moment. It was then the young girl walked down the driveway and stepped into the roadway just as a car was passing the home. The driver tried to avoid hitting the small girl and stopped a very short distance from the point of contact.

"The distance to stop the car tells me she (the driver) was driving at around 20 to 25 mph, which is within the limits," Chief Aston said. "It's just a bad situation. I hope the injuries are not as bad as we first thought."

The driver and witness accounts match up, Aston said, although everyone involved was very upset. "We will talk to the driver and the mother again on Monday to try to get more information."

The young girl was taken by ambulance to a landing zone at the intersection of Highways 191 and 121 near the Hilltop.

No other information on the condition of the child was available.
