Bush claims Jackson residency impossible

web posted October 31, 2006

JOHNSTON – Announced Write-in candidate for the District 1 School Board seat, Zach Bush, has turned up the heat in a three-way race between himself, incumbent Mary Alice Jackson, and newcomer Nathanial Jackson. Mr. Bush contested Mr. Jackson’s residency and lost in a decision that was later upheld in District Court. Now, however, Mr. Bush contends that Mr. Jackson’s claimed residence is listed as commercial only by Johnston Town zoning and therefore cannot be used as a residence. Town Officials, Mr. Bush claimed, have sent notification to Mr. Jackson in that regard.

“At 3:10 pm I was contacted by the Johnston Town Clerk and informed that a letter was being sent to Nathaniel Jackson, per Mayor Campbell, that according to town zoning ordinances he can not use 420 Railroad as his residence due to that area being zoned as a business district. And that Mrs. Alma Mathis already has a business located at that address,” a statement from Mr. Bush read. Contacted by phone Mr. Bush said that he is not sure how the residency rulings will play out prior to the election if Mr. Jackson cannot live at the address he submitted as his residence.

“The law is very clear,” Mr. Bush said, “you have to be a legal resident at that address when you register to vote. This proves (Mr.) Jackson committed perjury when he said he lived there.”

Calls to Mr. Jackson’s cell phone went unanswered. There is no listed home phone in Mr. Jackson’s name in the phonebook or search directories at 420 Railroad Avenue.

Due to the late hour Johnston Town Hall was closed and unavailable for comment on the legitimacy of the claimed letter. A call to Johnston Mayor Willie Campbell at his home went unanswered. EdgefieldDaily.com will have more on this developing story on Wednesday. This story represents only one side of the breaking information and is incomplete at this time.
