Community Development Expert Speaks in Johnston

web posted October 31, 2008
JOHNSTON – The Johnston Development Corporation, a non-profit volunteer organization that has helped the Town of Johnston grow in many ways for over 20 years, heard from a S.C. expert about planning and development opportunities available to the Town.

Walter Harris, Director of the Innovation Center of the Institute for Economic and Community Development of Clemson University, told the Johnston Development Corporation last week that planning, then growing, are proven strategies. His presentation included success in Ninety-Six, S.C., and other small communities, using a process known as “charrettes.”

Charrettes, a french word to describe this planning effort, is usually a three-day process where a team of experts come into the Town.  During that time, they do one-on-one interviews with elected officials, community leaders, business owners and citizens to discover what’s important to them.  Then, the team assesses the community’s strengths and weaknesses while looking for branding and marketing opportunities.

In addition, the team delves into the economic vitality of the area by studying census data, economic trends and determines where citizens are spending their money.  That information can show what businesses could be recruited to Town to fill a need.

“A charrette is an intensive planning process,” Harris said.  “It looks at where people work and live, where they spend their money and takes a market snapshot.”

The Johnston Development Corporation is in the initial stages of determining how to best go about planning for Johnston’s future growth and promotion of the area.

Dean Campbell, Development Board Chairman, said the group understands the future of the Town depends on leadership from all areas of Johnston.

“Our Town’s future is much too important to be left to chance,” he said.  “Planning for our growth, determining how we should grow and involving as many people as possible will lead us into a brighter future.  It’s hard work, but the results will be well worth it.”

The Johnston Development Corporation works to aid the community in areas such as economic development, education, recreation, historic preservation, tourism, scientific and cultural opportunities, and continued promotion of Johnston.

The Development Corporation already sponsors the Town’s annual Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and the Peach Blossom Festival.

The Johnston Development Board has also worked hard throughout the years to promote the Town, surrounding areas and businesses, complementing the work of the Town, Chamber of Commerce, local civic groups, as well as other local and Edgefield County organizations.
