![]() Loan company site of armed robbery Friday afternoon web posted November 18, 2006 JOHNSTON – A Johnston business was the scene of a second armed robbery in the town this week. Friday afternoon at 4:50 pm, 911 dispatchers received a call of the robbery at the Ridge Loan Company on Sawyer Avenue. A black male dressed in a burgundy dress and a long wig presented a small black handgun and demanded money. How much money, if any, was given to the man was not available. The man left running on foot down Sawyer Avenue towards Edisto Avenue. Johnston Police, Sheriff’s Deputies, and Edgefield Police swarmed to the area to set up a perimeter in an attempt to capture the robber. The man reportedly went to Monks Corner and tried to get a ride out of the area moments after the robbery. Another report came in saying a man fitting the description was spotted at a restaurant on Railroad Avenue minutes later. Investigators were quickly assembling surveillance video from several area businesses in an effort to identify the gunman as other officers patrolled the area and followed up on sightings and leads in the case. The man was described as a black male, slender build, and clean-shaven wearing a burgundy dress and a long dark wig. The clothing and wig were discovered later by police discarded near a park. The Edgefield County Sheriff’s Bloodhound Team tracked the man to an apartment on Slide Hill Road, but the man left the area before officers arrived. Within the hour at least three individuals were taken into custody but it is not known if they were related to the crime. One man had five outstanding warrants from Saluda County against him records showed. By 7 pm Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston and the Sheriff’s Office released the perimeter. Evidence, including fingerprints and shoe prints, was being compared during the developing investigation. The suspect continues to be at large at the time. Investigators are working several leads in the case. The crime does not appear, at this time, to be related to the armed robbery earlier this week. For
