Three vehicle collision stalls traffic on Hyw 23 Monday afternoon

web posted November 28, 2006

JOHNSTON – A three-vehicle chain-reaction collision stalled traffic on Highway 23 for about two hours Monday afternoon just before 3 pm. According to witnesses a small Ford Ranger pickup slowed near the bottom of Dorn’s Hill and a white Dodge Ram 250 van behind it also slowed. Unfortunately a Johnston Town garbage truck also heading west down the hill could not stop and struck the van sending it crashing into the pickup truck. The impact pushed the pickup about twenty yards up the road, injuring the driver who was taken to the hospital.

A passenger in the Dodge van was also transported to an area hospital for treatment of injuries received in the collision. No one in the garbage truck was injured.

Edgefield County Deputies directed traffic around the crash scene as the South Carolina Highway Patrol arrived and began investigating the crash. The pickup sustained heavy damage in the crash as did the Dodge van. Both were towed from the scene.

Johnston Mayor Willie Campbell arrived on the scene and said he was thankful there were no serious injuries involved. Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston also surveyed the damage before returning to town.

The condition of the two injured parties was not available but the injuries were considered to be relatively minor. Traffic was restored to normal after two hours.
