Suspected burglar arrested in Johnston
web
posted November 30, 2007
JOHNSTON – Johnston Police and Edgefield
County Deputies apprehended a suspected burglar Wednesday afternoon.
The event played out just after 4 pm when a woman on the 1100 block of
Calhoun Street called to report their lawnmower and a weed-eater stolen
as she and her husband witnessed the theft.
The husband followed the alleged culprits to The Chicken Place on
Railroad Avenue in Johnston where he confronted the man seen taking the
lawn equipment. After notifying the suspect that the police had been
called, reports show, a man later identified as Shannon Hicks, 35, of
Lakeview Road ran from the scene leading police on a half-hour manhunt.
As Johnston Police Officers and Sheriff’s Deputies converged on the
area Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston and Sheriff’s Chief Investigator
Randy Doran began checking known locations for Mr. Hicks. Inv. Doran
made contact with Mr. Hicks who claimed he was in Ridge Springs. Within
moments Chief Aston stated he had Mr. Hicks in custody on Dove Street
in Johnston.
Mr. Hicks was arrested and transported to the Edgefield County
Detention Center where he was held Thursday on a custody order awaiting
formal charges of larceny and burglary in the second degree. Mr. Hicks
is being charged, Inv. Doran said, for the most recent theft and a
previous burglary that occurred earlier this month.
Hicks was released from jail just before Thanksgiving after an arrest
for forgery in Johnston, Inv. Doran said.
No court date was available on Thursday.
