Lotts Grove Baptist Church dates back at least 100 years

By Anne Waits
web posted December 10, 2008
JOHNSTON – Members of the Lotts Grove Baptist Church are hoping to have a new church building soon but they are not sure where all the money is coming from. Board of Trustees member Walter A. Burton said no one is exactly sure how old the church is but it dates back at least 100 years.

It is believed that the land was donated some time in the late 1800s by the Lotts family of Johnston. No accurate records were kept, he said, apparently because no one thought to do so. “We’ve been trying in recent years to find out exactly how old the church is,” he said. “We’re sure it’s more than a hundred years old.”

Octavia Brown and her husband E.W. Brown are buried in two of the roughly 40 graves scattered on the grounds to the front and side of the church building. Mrs. Brown was born in 1887 and died in 1966. Mr. Brown was born in 1878 and dies in 1934. Burton remembers Mrs. Brown since he and his family have attended the church all their lives.

“I have six living brothers and three sisters,” he said. “Four of my brothers and one sister come here now.” In addition to serving on the Board of Trustees, he is assistant superintendent of Sunday School and a member of the choir. His brother Curtis is a deacon.

“My mother died in January,” he said. “She was 94 and she joined the church when she was a teenager.”

Although the congregation is small, the church means a lot to some of its members.

The church has fallen in ill repair and the members are looking to rebuild. The ceiling on the inside is falling down where the roof has caved in and the floors are weak and rotting. A piece of the roof has already fallen off. The sanctuary is furnished with weathered old pews and a number of old pianos are contained in the building. The church is heated with gas heaters.

“We caution members not to walk in certain areas because of the weak floors and places where the ceiling is caving in,” Burton said.

Groundbreaking has already been held for a new sanctuary on the same tract of land.  The only problem is the members are not sure where all the money is coming from.

“We’ve been thinking of reconstructing for a long time,” Burton said. “We’re raising what we can, but progress is slow.”

The church is asking for assistance from the community. The cost of a new building is estimated at $65,000 and this figure does not include new furnishings.

“We are asking for the community’s love and support,” Burton said. “Together, we can do this. We would appreciate all the help we can get.”

Donations can be made to the Lotts Grove Building Fund’s account, “Churches Working Together,” at First Citizen’s Bank in Johnston.
