Livingston announces candidacy for Johnston Mayor

web posted December 17, 2009
JOHNSTON – With the election season of 2010 fast approaching, one man has stepped forward to announce his candidacy now. Johnston businessman Andy Livingston said he would be seeking the office as Mayor of Johnston in the April 2010 election. "I am announcing my intention early because I am eager to serve my hometown. I believe my occupational experience will help me lead the Town in these difficult economic times,” Livingston said

The filing period for the election does not open until January 5, 2010, giving candidates just four short months to mount a campaign. Announcing early gives Livingston an additional three weeks to campaign.

Mr. Livingston said he is seeking the Mayor’s job for many reason, among them, “As a lifelong resident, I have a vested interest in our future and I want to see Johnston grow and prosper, and bring our community together to face the challenges of the 21st century".

Running for office is not new to Mr. Livingston, who is a certified public accountant. He has been elected and reelected to a seat on the Edgefield County School Board since 1994. He has also served on the Johnston Development Board since 1982.

He will face off against incumbent Mayor Willie Campbell, who has yet to announce his bid for reelection. However, in recent conversations, Mayor Campbell stated he would be seeking a second term.

In the event Mr. Livingston is successful in his run for mayor, he would have to resign his seat on the School Board before taking office. If not, he will retain his seat on the School Board and Mayor Campbell would begin his second term.

Quick Facts
The election is a non-partisan.
The term of office for Mayor is four years.
The population of the Town of Johnston is estimated between 2,300 and 2,600.
