Driver may face "attempt to kill" charge against officers at road block

web posted December 19, 2006

JOHNSTON – A license check conducted at the intersection of Aiken and Park Avenues has lead to the arrest of a Johnston man now facing possible charges of assault and batter with intent to kill among many other charges Sunday. Just before 10:30pm an Edgefield County Deputies and a Johnston Police Officer were working a routine license check when a silver Honda Accord approach the checkpoint and rather than stop the car veered towards the officers and sped up, barely missing at least one officer.

One officer yelled for other officers to get out of the way and the Accord blew through the checkpoint. At that time a Johnston Police Officer and a Sheriff’s Deputy began pursuing the Honda.

The car continued down Aiken Avenue and turned left on Bland Avenue where the officer initiated his blue lights and siren in an attempt to stop the Accord. The car then turned right onto Railroad Avenue heading towards Edisto Street. The driver ran a red light at the intersection of Railroad Avenue and turned north on Edisto Avenue. The driver then crossed onto Lakeview Drive still refusing to stop.

When the driver attempted a turn onto Lakeview Drive he lost control of the car and struck a road sign causing damage to the front tire. Unable to obtain a speed greater than 5 or 10 mph the driver continued to try to elude police.

The driver continued at a slow rate of speed until he reached a residence on the 100 block of Sandra Way where police were able to get him stopped. Police arrested Kenneth Jerome Williams, 26, of 108 Sandra Way, Johnston, and charged him with assault and battery with the intent to kill for trying to hit the officers at the license check by the Sheriff’s Office. In addition, the tag on the Honda was stolen and Johnston Police charged Mr. Williams with the stolen tag, driving under suspension, failure to stop for a blue light, operating an uninsured vehicle, and failure to surrender a suspended license.

Mr. Williams, according to police reports, told the officers he ran because, “I just didn’t want to go to jail.” Williams was transported to the Edgefield County Detention Center where he remained in custody Monday morning.
