Man Asks Officer for Ride and Gets One, To Jail

web posted December 19, 2013

JOHNSTON A Saluda man approach a Johnston Police Officer early Wednesday morning and asked for a ride to Saluda County. The officer replied that he could not give him a ride because it was outside of his jurisdiction. The man then replied that the officer should take him into custody before he broke in someplace, leaving the officer to suggest that was not a good idea because breaking into a building is a "high charge" (felony).

The man then claimed to have a warrant for his arrest in Edgefield County but refused multiple requests to give his name. Once the officer was able to get the man's information a records check showed Travis Lamont Hill, 31, of Saluda, had an outstanding Magistrate Court bench warrant for his arrest.

Hill was given a ride, in handcuffs, to the Edgefield County Detention Center. He was allowed to smoke a cigarette and make two phone calls before being placed in custody, according to an incident report.

Online court records did not list information on the charge behind the warrant.
