Wanted man captured in Johnston
web
posted December 28, 2007

JOHNSTON – Julius
Griffin, 21, wanted for
his alleged participation in an armed robbery in Edgefield on December
19, was taken into custody on Thursday morning after an anonymous tip
was given to the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office alerting authorities
to his whereabouts. Edgefield and Johnston Police, along with several
Sheriff’s Deputies, converged on the Park Avenue Apartments in Johnston
and found Griffin in an upstairs apartment. After a short discussion
through the closed door Griffin emerged from the apartment and was
taken into custody without incident.
As EdgefieldDaily.com reported
previously, an Edgefield man was visiting his girlfriend at her
home on the 300 block of Gary Street when the couple heard a knock on
the door. The two were reportedly playing cards in the bedroom and
ignored the knock. A short time later three armed gunmen dressed in
black with black ski masks entered and began shouting demands and
pointed the gun at the head of the boyfriend.

At some point the
boyfriend tried to wrestle the gun away from one of
the assailants and two of the men began “pistol whipping” the man
causing a head injury. The boyfriend was able to remove the mask from
one of the attackers, injuring the attacker’s eye in the process. The
man’s girlfriend then recognized the attacker as Griffin. When she
called out Griffin’s name he allegedly threatened to kill her.
The boyfriend sustained a head wound in the attack and was treated at
the Edgefield County Hospital and was released later that night.
Police tried to arrest Mr. Griffin last week at two locations he was
known to frequent in Edgefield, but were unsuccessful.
Mr. Griffin is
currently being held at the Edgefield County Detention
Center awaiting a bond hearing on charges of armed robbery, assault and
battery with the intent to kill, burglary in the first degree,
possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and
pointing and presenting a firearm.
A search warrant issued on the Park Avenue apartment was also executed
but police were unable to obtain the weapon allegedly used in the
robbery. No information on what evidence, if any, was collected from
the apartment was available.
Griffin had cut his hair to avoid being
recognized.
The case remains under investigation. Edgefield Police Chief Ronnie
Carter said the identities of the other two assailants are known but
could not be released citing the ongoing investigation. More arrests
are expected in the case.
