Johnston gets new police officer, approves street closings for Peach
Blossom Festival
web
posted February 9, 2010
JOHNSTON – The Johnston Town Council hired
a new officer for the Johnston Police Department at Monday night’s
meeting. Matthew B. Lott was confirmed by a public vote after an
executive session following the regular meeting. Johnston Police Chief
Chris Aston said he recommended Lott for the position.
The only matter up for discussion at the meeting was the approval of a
request by the Johnston Development Board for the use of the Municipal
Parking lot and the closings of some street for the May 1 Peach Blossom
festival. It passed with unanimous support.
Under New Business Councilwoman Tyra Miller said she had been contacted
by a constituent who had a complaint about the public works department
breaking the lid of their trash container while picking up the garbage.
Mrs. Miller said she just wanted to bring that to the Mayor’s attention.
Councilman Morris Holmes stated the plants in the flower beds around
town needed to be replaced as some were dead.
Mayor Willie Campbell gave his report which included a reminder for the
council members to encourage their constituents to be sure and comply
with the Census this year. He stated the better the count represents
the town’s population, the more money they are available to receive.
He gave a brief update on the upgrades to the sewer system saying the
job has been placed out for bids and they are waiting on an approval to
move forward. Mayor Campbell reminded the council of the statements of
Sen. Massey and Rep. Clyburn at the January 28 Intergovernmental
Meeting about the state budget “would be tight” and they should take
that into consideration as they prepare for this year’s budget.
Mayor Campbell said he and others are still discussing ways to make use
of the National Guard Armory for recreation and youth events but no
progress has been made.
Town Clerk Frances Quarles recently attended a workshop of Rails to
Trails Grants process and said the town was too late to file for any
grants at this time but could submit to be considered in the next round
of grants later this year. The grants are a 50/50 match in funding from
the state and the town.
Another issues discussed was possibly getting high definition cable
service for the town. Mayor Campbell said he has heard from several who
want the service and are unable to get Northland Cable to respond to
their wishes. “They even said something about submitting a petition,”
the Mayor said.
Councilman Holmes suggested having a representative from Northland
Cable attend the next meeting. Mayor Campbell said he would be in
contact with Northland in an effort to make it possible.
With no other business the meeting was adjourned to the executive
session and then closed after they emerged and voted to hire Office
Lott.
