Johnston Town Council February meeting

web posted February 13, 2007

JOHNSTON – The Johnston Town Council held their February meeting Monday night and after disposing of the approval of minutes and reports went into a Public Hearing on a Rails to Trails Program. Several local citizens supported the Mayor’s recommended Watson Park location.  Afterwards Roger Lamb of the Johnston Lions Club asked the town council for permission to use the vacant room next to the library for their annual flea market during the Peach Blossom Festival, which will be held on April 7. The Council approved the request.

Mr. Risher of the USDA Rural Development gave a short presentation of the available programs for grants, loans, and a combination of both that are available for the town. Mr. Risher provided the council members and the Mayor with a list of available programs and offered his help in upcoming projects.

Mayor Campbell did take a moment to introduce Johnston’s newest Police Officer Mike Haag, who attended the meeting with Chief Chris Aston. Chief Aston said in earlier interviews Officer Haag is a highly qualified officer and will be a great asset to his department.

Under a request for input for the upcoming budget discussions several items were brought forward including requests from the Police Department for two new patrol cars at a cost of $62,000, six digital cameras for patrol cars at a cost of $25,350, converting the overtime pay structure to an actual overtime increasing costs another estimated $15,000.

From the Public Works Department Administrator Gambrel said their “wish list” was for $6,000 to repair the restrooms, $4,500 for a new ice machine, $32,000 for a new truck, $5,000 for a “Gator” vehicle similar to a gold cart, $2,000 for a utility trailer, and $72,000 for new roll carts.

Mr. Gambrel said he also wanted some direction on how the salary structure for town employees should be addressed as far as pay increases. The council took the requests in as information.

Police Chief Aston also requested that he be allowed to seek bids on repairs to the Police Department which has not been done in twenty years. Among the items would be carpeting, painting of the walls and trim, expanding the size of the evidence closet, and sound proofing a wall between his office and the lobby of the Town Hall. The council agreed to receive bids for the work.
