Johnston Mayor to put pressure on County for additional recreational funds for all towns Mayor Campbell: “Johnston is a part of this county” Click here to listen to the Webcast web posted August 14, 2007 JOHNSTON – Johnston Mayor Willie Campbell stated Monday night at the Johnston Town Council meeting that he was not satisfied with the amount of recreation funds paid to the Town of Johnston. Campbell said he attended the Edgefield County Council meeting last week and intends on attending more in the coming months to address what he feels is a slighting of Johnston when it comes to funds for the library and recreation by the county. “I think that Johnston is still yet a part of the county,” Mayor Campbell said adding that he has received preliminary numbers of money spent at Bettis Park and that leads him to believe that additional funds could be shared with the three local municipalities. Mayor Campbell said that since 2004 Bettis Park has received almost $300,000 in capital expenditures and over $29,000 in operating expenditures alone. Mayor Campbell said he felt the county council should set aside a minimum of $25,000 for the three towns. “Johnston is a part of this county,” Campbell said and it deserved more support. Mayor Campbell said if the county can give Bettis Park “$300,000” it certainly could do more for other parks in the county, including those in Johnston, Edgefield, and Trenton. Councilwoman Tyra Miller spoke up and stated, “When I asked questions I was told that the county owns that park and that is why so much money is invested there – because they actually own that park.” Mayor Campbell stated he was under the impression the property was leased by the county. After a short discussion it was determined that the county had a fifty-year lease. Councilwoman Miller then interjected that, “they’re investing money in a park they don’t own.” Mayor Campbell said after the meeting that all parks in the county, including those in the towns, were open to all county residents and the county should recognize that reality.
