Johnston hears complaints of loitering around town, unkempt properties
web
posted November 10, 2009
JOHNSTON – The Johnston Town Council held
their November meeting Tuesday evening with councilmen Morris Holmes
and Buddy Smith being absent. During the open public comment period
held first in the agenda, one woman rose to bring two concerns in order
to have them addressed, loitering at certain locations and properties
that are not being tended to as they are required.
Mayor Willie Campbell asked Johnston Police Chief Chris Aston to
address the matters in which he said he would meet with the woman after
the meeting to get the specific locations. “I’ve got a pretty good idea
where some of them are,” he said, but wanted a complete list. Also
brought up was Office Nick Vanput has been charged as the zoning
officer and is currently addressing properties that are in violation of
the zoning laws.
The only New Business the town council addressed included a request and
approval of the Holiday schedule for the town and council meeting for
2010.
The request was from the Johnston development Board asking to use the
Municipal Parking Lot for the annual Christmas Tree Lighting on
November 30. Councilman Tommy Burton said he felt the annual
event was deserving of their support and made the motion to allow the
use of the property which was follow with a quick second by
councilwoman Tyra Miller and the approval was unanimous.
The approval of the meeting and holiday schedule also passed
unanimously.
With no other business Mayor Campbell gave his abbreviated report
focusing on the progress being made after the repairs to the leaf
machine. The machine is up and running and leaves are being picked up
however, due to the time the machine was down they are running behind
schedule. The mayor said he apologized for any inconvenience the
citizens of the town may have been faced with due to the repairs.
With no other business the meeting was adjourned to go into an
executive session to receive a legal update from town Attorney Greg
Anderson.
The public meeting was only nine minutes, a possible record for the
town council meetings.
