![]() Chief Easler cleared of wrongdoing, information withheld by Town web posted December 6, 2006 JOHNSTON – Former Johnston Police Chief Butch Easler has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the investigation conducted by SLED that led to his dismissal according to reports received by EdgefieldDaily.com. Contacted on Tuesday about the news Easler said he had not been notified about the investigation being closed. According to Johnston Town Attorney Greg Anderson the town received a letter from the Attorney Generals Office stating there would be no charges filed as a result of the investigation by SLED. The letter was received by the town in October but has not been released. Town Administrator Olin Gambrel said Tuesday that he was aware of a letter but was not involved in the matter due to his being out of town at the time and was unaware of the letter’s content. Mayor Willie Campbell was unable to be reached for comment on why it has taken so long for the letter to be made public. Chief Easler received a considerable amount of press coverage by local internet, print, and television media throughout the investigation, his suspension from duty, and later his termination under the cloud of impropriety. A letter closing the investigation and clearing Easler of any charges should have been issued as an immediate press release to local media. Attorney Greg Anderson tried to fax a copy of the letter to EdgefieldDaily.com but it was not received. A copy will be obtained on Wednesday and placed online on Thursday. EdgefieldDaily.com will have more on this story throughout the week as more information becomes available and interviews with all parties involved. Mr. Anderson is not responsible for distribution of information for the town. That lies upon Mayor Willie Campbell. For
