Dining Review

La Cantina

DINING REVIEW – What a surprise awaits you nestled in a tranquil wooded setting just over the McCormick County line in Clarks Hill! We arrived at La Cantina, located on Garrett Road, a few minutes late for our 7:00 p.m. reservation. We were graciously greeted at the door and taken to our table where friends were already enjoying a cheese sampler appetizer. As we were seated, the waitress immediately took our drink order. Seating is available both inside and outside on a limited basis so reservations are highly recommended. Due to the extreme heat of our current weather we decided to enjoy our meal inside.

After drinks were served, the waitress returned for our order. We were served a tossed salad with crisp lettuce and a mellow ranch dressing. Along with the salad, a basket of homemade bread with butter was presented much to our enjoyment.
Each entree was served as we finished our salads. The Calypso Chicken was a boneless chicken breast amply stuffed with a house borsine cheese of feta parmesan artichoke heart, garlic and blended spices with an almond crust served with an Italian pasta tossed in tomato, fresh spinach and parmesan.

The Horno Steak was a New York Strip steak cooked in "The Horno", a 7 ton earthen brick and stone oven fueled with hickory and oak wood that heats to temperatures of 1200-1800 degrees Fahrenheit.   According to a diner in our party, this was the most perfectly cooked steak he had ever eaten! The Portuguese Pork was a loin of pork encrusted with cracked pepper, brown sugar and gram masala stuffed with Italian Sausage and served with a Cabernet Butter. All entries elicited rave reviews from our table.

The leisurely enjoyed dinner was delightfully capped off by the talented co-owner, Rusty Lindberg. Not only is he an accomplished classical guitarist, but an entertaining ventriloquist. This night "Harvey the Janitor" was the featured guest. So be sure to plan your reservation to include the entertainment for a doubly enjoyable evening. We experienced an extra treat as a storm in the area caused the lights to blink on and off a couple of times adding to the charm of the restaurant and the show.

An item of special interest to our party was the fact that the co-owner Laura is a descendent of Governor Ben Tillman of Edgefield. The restaurant is located on the family's homeplace. The restaurant itself is a step back in time with its hand hewed wood and stone and historically accurate fashions.

After a hectic week, La Cantina offers a superb cuisine in a rustic relaxed atmosphere with delightful entertainment. Entree's range from$18.00 to $23.00 and are served with soup or salad, vegetable and bread. When you factor in the classical music and lighthearted comedy with the wonderful food, you have a most enjoyable and affordable evening.
