Writer says "Stop the poison" of the Wandering Minds

web posted January 12, 2009
Dear Editor,
As you and I have discussed before, I have made it my policy not to respond to comments made on the Wandering Minds section of EdgefieldDaily.com. Many of these comments are written by people who have not tried to seek the facts. Pieces of information added to no accountability of signing your name opens the door for counterproductive and many times hate filled statements.

By allowing the writer to hide behind the anonymous format the Wandering Minds provides, it is impossible for any elected official or citizen to have an open and informed discussion on any matter. This anonymous format is poisoning our community in more ways than I can mention. Just imagine wanting to relocate to a nice community and doing a “Google search” on Edgefield County and finding yourself reading Wandering Minds.

I can not sit on the sidelines any longer and watch our great county tear itself apart. Yes, like all communities, we have problems that need to be addressed. However, we also have ways to deal with our problems.  It is discouraging to see the attendance and public interaction at our Town and County council meetings not to mention the School board meetings. These are the type platforms where problems should be openly discussed and addressed if necessary. Everyone is accountable for their own opinions and/or statements.
First, I would like to set the record straight by making it clear that the Town of Edgefield is not paying any rent for the use of Mr. Rainsford’s building for the newly-installed camera for our Square.  Moreover, Mr. Rainsford has generously agreed to provide the electrical power for the camera together with the space required for the computer.  It is sad to see the relentless campaign against Mr. Rainsford.  He has done as much for this Town and County as anyone I know.

I have known and worked with him for over 15 years and continue to be amazed at his creative and resourceful ideas to improve Edgefield County.  Yes, he is a businessman but his first love is Edgefield County and its citizens.  I am not aware of any instance where he has ever used his position or influence for his own personal gain to the detriment of the public.
My second point is to publicly ask you to consider changing the format of your Wandering Minds section and require the writers to identify themselves. The anonymous format is a platform for deception and slander.  This great nation was not built on anonymous men and women afraid to identify themselves.  Every citizen has the right to their opinion and should feel free to voice that opinion.  But with that right should also come the responsibility to seek the facts and openly stand behind your position. Please don’t misunderstand what I am saying.  I am not asking to stop any writer or their opinion, just to identify themselves so their concerns can be addressed on an individual basis.

I know you love this community as much as I do and again ask you to take a bold step and STOP THE POISON!  Let’s work together to re-direct all the negative energy in ways that build up, not tear apart.
