Letter to the Editor

Nam Veteran Defends Gingrich, Asks for Support

web posted January 16, 2012

Dear Editor,
I wish to respond to the letter writer Zach Bush whose letter was web posted January 10, 2012. I am a proud veteran (non war) of the Vietnam era.  I served in the United States Army 101st Airborne Division, 327th Infantry, Headquarter and Headquarters Company, I was a volunteer and served from June of 1960 to June of 1963.

During that era about 1 1/2 to 2 % of those who were eligible to serve actually served. Some were draft dodgers and many were not. All who were eligible were not called and all who were eligible were not needed.

You claim that Paul volunteered, but he did not volunteer and I do not know that he said he did. But you say he did which is not the truth. Paul was drafted in 1962 even though he had children. That was the draft board policy in 1962. At the beginning of 1963 the draft board policy was changed and fathers were not to be called up by that policy. Newt Gingrich was called before the board, examined and by their policy and decision was not drafted in mid 1963 because he was a father! He was deemed not eligible by the draft board period. He spoke the truth when he said he was not eligible and he did not ask for it. Neither he nor hundreds of thousands of others volunteered and for many and varied reasons, I remind you, Mr. Bush, that they and the other millions of citizens who did not serve are the United Stated of ?America that you say you love and served!

Your vile and wicked assault on Newt Gingrich is an assault on millions of Americans whom you say you love and served. Today we look back on several newer wars and conflicts and we have a volunteer military. Are all those who did not volunteer to go to war as deserving of you vitriol and slanderous name calling as well? I question the sincerity of your claim of love and patriotism for the United States of America based on your ugly assault on Newt Gingrich.

New Gingrich is only one of 50% of the men in this country who have gone through a divorce or two. Divorce is tragic and most who have experienced it will agree. To call Newt the wicked and slanderous names you have says more about you and your character than about him or divorce itself.

I am calling on every citizens in this county to, at the very least, show our fellow American citizen, Newt Gingrich that he is loved and appreciated for his love for America and desire to serve as our President.

I have been forgiven and freely I forgive, all in Jesus' name.

Jerry Pugh
