Writer has concerns on school safety
web posted February 1, 2006

Regarding the Opinion letter posted on the site on January 30, 2005.  I have also seen the "danger" that some of the local schools put the children that they are entrusted with at risk.

I recently visited Wardlaw Academy and was asking to speak with a specific student. I was told where the student was and directed to the correct class. These people had no idea who I was, they did not check my identity with my drivers license or anything.

I needed to speak with this student, but I would have felt more comfortable had someone at least asked me WHO I was. My children do not go to Edgefield County Schools, but the schools that they do go to, verify the drivers license of ANYONE picking that child up from the school. They will not allow the child to go to a car in car line unless they recognize that person, if you ask that someone else pick up for you at car line, you must provide the school with a complete description of not only the car but the person as well and they will verify the license of that person right there in the car line.

It makes me nervous that apparently anyone can walk into the schools and talk to whomever they want to at any time. I think that the schools need to re-evaluate their policies to make sure that the child that they have been entrusted with receives adequate supervision.  After all , we trust these people with our precious children every day.
