Merriwether Fire Chief Thanks Those Answering the Call to Ice Storm

web posted February 17, 2014

Dear Editor,
Sunday as I finally get a chance to sit back and reflect on the events of the last five days, I would like to thank the men and women of the Merriwether Fire Dept. for their unheralded performance during the ice storm. These men and women worked tirelessly from preparing for and reacting during the storm. Staffing of the stations, communications, and doing any and every task they were asked of and even going beyond the call and the expectations of the fire service.

They made it happen by doing whatever it took to get the job done. They cleared the roads for emergency vehicles all over the area time and time again. Stopping to check on and delivering oxygen to those in need. I cannot thank them and their families enough for being unselfish and being away from their homes and taking care of our community in this time of need even when they had their own issues at their house.

What a great group of volunteers.
To the Westside Fire Dept. stepping up to the plate and assisting us with whatever we needed even though they were dealing with their own events. When we called, they were on it without batting an eye. Thanks to each and every one of them. Great Job.

To the Edgefield 911 Center. With the extreme volume of 911 calls, telephone calls, and radio traffic an excellent job was done by all even under adverse conditions and equipment failure. They also got the job done by adapting and overcoming. They did an outstanding job.

To the folks seeking shelter that stayed with us at [Merriwether Fire] station 3. We were happy to have you and we hope you enjoyed your stay with us as much as we enjoyed y’all. Thanks for becoming the house watchman and cooking for us. You became a part of the family.

To the folks who yelled and cursed at us for blocking the road with trucks, and cones while we worked to clear the road or protect them from live wires. “God Bless you.”

To the men and women of the numerous power companies, our hats are off to you for your efforts to restore a power grid that took many years to build and is expected by the aforementioned to be fixed in a day. THANK YOU for coming to help us. These groups of folks are amazing to get the work done that you have and restore our power.

To the numerous civilian personnel who offered and used their tractors, saws, vehicles to assist us with different task. You are deeply appreciated.

To the community folks who sent food to the stations Thank You very Much. It was enjoyed by all.

To the FD insurance company, who is a very caring company to check on the well-being of our staff and equipment. They called to check each day for an update to see if they were needed or could provide us with additional resources. Unfortunately they have a truck to replace due to a tree falling on it.
