Rep. Barrett speaks to voters after "stimulus" bill signing

web posted February 18, 2009
Dear Friends,
Today, President Obama signed into law H.R. 1, the Democrat Spending Bill, or as he likes to call it, the "stimulus" bill. This legislation is the largest expansion of government spending since World War II. Today with a single pen stroke, the President has committed to spending $792 billion and put each American family on the hook for $100,000 in federal debt. I voted against this legislation because it costs too much, takes too long to make a difference, and fails to create enough new jobs.

I know that people across our state are hurting, and I feel for them. They are losing their jobs, their homes, and their financial security. And, I agree that our economy needs help, but this bill was not the answer. I believe that allowing people to keep more of their hard earned money is the solution to the current economic crisis. That's why I signed on to the Republican alternative to the Democrat Spending Bill.

The Republican plan would allow small businesses - the heart and soul of our economy - to take a tax deduction equal to 20 percent of their income - a deduction that will allow small businesses to hire new employees. It would also lower individual tax rates to provide immediate tax relief for working families. In South Carolina, this plan will create 34,000 more new jobs than the Democrat plan and will cost half as much.

There are hard days still ahead of us as we continue work through these tough economic times. But, I still have faith in the American people, and I believe investing in small business and entrepreneurs will always yield far greater returns than expanding an already bloated federal government.

As always if I can ever be of service to you or your family, please do not hesitate to contact me.

US Representative J. Gresham Barrett (SC-R)
