Letter to the Editor

Victim of Beating, Robbery by Chandler Weeps for Current Victim

web posted March 4, 2015

Dear Editor,
Three years ago, Edward Chandler invaded my home, beat me, and robbed me. I did absolutely nothing to deserve that. Yet, four months ago, a gutless, brainless jury chose to believe the lies of a known thug over the testimony of an upstanding, law abiding citizen. In doing that, they 1. labeled me as a liar and a drug user and 2. they set a rabid animal loose upon the citizens of Johnston. For four months, I have carried a gun with me everywhere I have gone, knowing that sooner or later he would get drunk enough or high enough on drugs to pay me another visit.

During these four months, I have spent several thousand dollars and more time and I can count trying to lift the negative cloud from my good name.

Yes, I wanted vindication but not like this. Not at the expense of someone else being savagely attacked as I was.

I consider myself all man and, as such, I don't cry easily. But I wept at the thought of what he put that lady through. Trust me when I say that I know what it's like to be at the mercy of a monster. No one deserves to be mistreated like that.

The real tragedy is that it shouldn't have happened. If that jury four months ago had taken their job seriously, Chandler would be in state prison serving at least 20 years instead of roaming the streets of Johnston looking for other victims.

I hope that judge and that jury sleep well at night, knowing what they have done to me and to that poor woman. I also hope the attorney who represented Chandler sleeps well, knowing that she either coached him to lie on the stand (which I suspect), or, at the very least knowingly condoned his perjured testimony.

The good citizens of Edgefield county have simply got to determine whether or not they want law and order or whether they prefer the lawlessness that now seems to exist. If they want law and order, then our juries have to grow some common sense and some back bone.

Roger Lamb
Johnston, SC

Editor's note: Mr. Lamb was robbed and beaten by two men who were found not guilty in a November trial.
