Letter to the Editor

Writer "Vehemently" disagrees with comment on Election Commission

web posted March 15, 2012

Dear Editor,
It amazes me that those screaming the loudest seem to be the least informed on a subject. I read a Wandering Minds comment from an anonymous person posted on March 14, 2012. The poster stated, “And then the election board didn't have, well you know, to file suit to appeal the judges decision. Weak, weak leaders, board members, political hacks in this county.”

They were talking about the Registration and Elections Commission for Edgefield County and the Nathaniel Jackson matter of last year.
I vehemently disagree with the poster’s description of the Commission. I find them to be genuine, hardworking individuals who take their positions seriously. Yes, the Commission lost the Jackson matter before the circuit judge. However, the Commission was not allowed by law to appeal the circuit court judge’s decision.

Section 7-5-250 of the SC Code of Laws only allows the individual [candidate] to appeal a circuit court decision to the Supreme Court. How does that make them weak or hacks?

Some people would rather try to make people look bad that to consider the facts.
The next time you see a Commission member, thank them for the job they do. And thank them for following the law.

Michael S. Medlock

Editor's note: The comment was posted in our comment section Wandering Minds. Mr. Medlock is also the Edgefield County attorney who represented the case in court - as a matter of full disclosure.
