Writer takes on smoking ban and private property rights
web posted April 30, 2007
OPINION – Dear Editor,
In response to the current one sided articles and proposed legislation to ban smoking state wide that would deny a private business RIGHTS that are enjoyed by private businesses around the world including dictatorships. This is the right for a private business to target a specific segment of the buying public to market their wares and make a profit. There is a difference between a private business open to the public and a Public facility funded by taxpayers.
A simple solution to this issue would be for Big brother to require restaurants and bars to post a sign at their entrances indicating No Smoking or Smoking Accommodated. This way the rights of the consumers or the businesses are not being trampled on and let this be the CHOICE of the private businesses to decide which sign to post without the bitter taste of Government Regulation! No citizen has the right to demand that a private business cater to their specific needs.
If we pass this law to ban smoking state wide, it sets a precedent. What is next? Based on either health or moral issues, do we demand a theatre showing XXX rated movies only show Disney, or do we demand that McDonald's only serve veggies? The list goes on and on.
