Merriwether County Council candidate lays out qualifications, plans for
change
web
posted May 27, 2008
Dear Editor,
My name is Genia Blackwell and I am offering to serve the Merriwether
Community as the representative for the County Council 5th District.
Having been born and raised in Merriwether, and now raising our own
family here, I have seen the changes our community has experienced over
the years.
Albert Einstein once said, "Only a life lived in the service to others
is worth living." That is part of the reason that I have decided
to run for county council, the fulfillment that is received from being
of service to others. I believe that I will be a voice for the
residents of the Merriwether district and I am excited about the
opportunity to make a positive difference.
Being in the financial services business for over 20 years and
nationally recognized for my abilities and knowledge, I believe there
is too much wasteful spending in our county budget. This is an area
where I believe my business management expertise will allow me to make
definite positive changes. I will approach the budget from a standpoint
of the priority of needs in our community and county rather than
current frivolous spending in other areas.
I truly believe that it is time for a reengineering of our county
offices and we need to move forward in a positive direction rather than
languish in the stagnation that comes from those who keep repeating the
mistakes of the past twenty years. It is time for new ideas, new
direction, and new heights to be reached in our community and our
county.
I would also like to review the process of county employee reviews and
reward those who are performing and set goals as well as provide a
process for candid feedback from county employees and citizens. If
employees are not empowered to perform, they won’t. However, if
there is accountability for high performance, then ownership is taken
by the employee and better results are given. I would like to see each
employee spirited to perform at their highest potential because they
are proud to be a county employee who is there to provide residents
with a service.
I believe our law enforcement and emergency responders are stretched
far too thin. They are covering a large county with only three deputies
on duty at any given time and only two ambulances to provide emergency
medical services. Our safety, as residents of this county, should be of
utmost importance to those elected to serve us and I believe our
current council members have allowed these areas to be ignored far too
long.
We, in the Merriwether Community, need to all be aware that North
Augusta is actively trying to annex into our community. They are
currently purchasing property and annexing despite the rejection of
their efforts by our neighbors. I believe that our current county
council has disregarded providing proper services to the Merriwether
area in an effort to aid the City of North Augusta’s efforts towards
annexation. Rectifying this situation will be a very high priority of
mine as your representative.
I believe that we should take measures to alter the path that has been
chosen for us by others and improve our community allowing it to be
recognized as the best place to live while keeping North Augusta from
taking control of our peaceful community. This can be done, but the
proper representation is needed to make this happen and I believe I
have the professional
background and the love for the community to bring about the
changes Merriwether needs.
I will be a voice that will be heard on our county council and I will
stand with you to do what is right for our community. I will always be
available to speak with any resident in order to provide the utmost
constituent service and address your concerns at the county
level.
I ask for your support in the June 10 Republican Primary, together we
can make a difference.
