Writer seeks Guardian ad Litem volunteers
web
posted June 2, 2010
Dear Editor,
South Carolina’s longest serving United States Senator, the late Strom
Thurmond, introduced legislation in 1988 to proclaim May as National
Foster Care Month. Senator Thurmond did this to bring awareness,
not just in our State, but also in our country, of issues and needs of
children who are in foster care. One of the most important things
they need is to have someone to ensure they don’t get lost in the
system. That role is filled by a Guardian ad Litem.
Every day in Edgefield County, a Volunteer Guardian ad Litem makes a
difference in the life of a child who is involved in the Family Court
system as a result of abuse or neglect. Their dedication and
devotion is not measured by awards, money or accolades. Their passion
is to ensure that every child has someone who is advocating for their
best interests. In our communities, both men and women have made
the decision to stand up and be a voice for children who can’t speak
for themselves.
If you know someone who serves as a Volunteer Guardian ad Litem, please
take time to thank them for their willingness to be involved. More
volunteers are needed every day. We must ask ourselves what role can we
or should we play in the lives of our most vulnerable children?
Training for new volunteers is scheduled for June 15 – 18, 2010, please
consider contacting your local Edgefield County office at 637-9614
today to get an application, a training manual and more details about
the training.
The children’s future may depend on it.
