Guest Column: Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta seeking candidates for House No. 18

By: Marlene Fernandes, Family Support HFHNA Chair

web posted June 29, 2016
GUEST COLUMN   A young lady and her two children ages 2 and 4, referred to by a co-worker, visited our previous Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta house. Liking what she saw, she diligently filled out the required paperwork and anxiously waited to be notified if she had been selected as the homeowner of house No. 17. House No. 17, a dream - in the process of being fulfilled, for this lucky family, is possible through donations and plenty of volunteer workers. The tempo builds up on Saturday, as a new phase in the construction process is started. A lot is accomplished each Saturday and Monday mornings by Habitat for Humanity North Augusta (HFHNA) members and volunteers, many from Fort Gordon, which is very much appreciated.

The HFHNA Board is 100% volunteers. The Family Support Committee acts as a liaison between the HFHNA Board and the prospective homeowner. Family Supports assists the excited homeowner make her selections, from samples provided by local merchants. She gets to pick the color of the siding, roof shingles and shutters for the outside. The inside choices are carpet, vinyl, kitchen cabinets along with knobs and lighting for the house. Blinds are also provided. This modest 3 bedrooms, 2 bath house is a standard floor plan used for all HFHNA homes. We also accept donations of washer/dryer and furniture. It is by no means FREE. The prospective homeowner is required to put in 200 hours of sweat equity and meet basic financial standards of acceptance. The initial 50 sweat equity hours are accomplished doing community service work and the balance of the hours are actually working at the construction site. The monthly interest free mortgage is made affordable and includes an escrow account that pays for property taxes, home insurance, annual termite inspection and a maintenance account.

Donations and volunteers are critical to our success but the most important part of that success is seeking qualified candidates who are interested in partnering with Habitat for Humanity of North Augusta. Interested families are encouraged to apply at www.hfhna.org. The HFHNA Board thanks all of our generous sponsors, donors and hardworking volunteers in supporting our community
