Business Owner Expresses Concern over Lack of Parking in Edgefield

web posted July 7, 2011

Dear Editor,
One of the prime ingredients of commerce is transportation. Trains and trucks to move raw materials to manufacturers. The same modes to move goods to distributors and retailers. Automobiles to transport consumers to retailers and the most important ingredient is a place to park the consumers vehicle. When parking is non existent or limited to consumer will look elsewhere to spend their money.

Edgefield has a two edged sword. We have consumers who want to shop our merchants and dine in our restaurants, with many times no place to park their vehicles. We also have the problem of business owners and their employees parking in front of theirs and other businesses. Some businesses are fortunate to have parking in the rear of their buildings or have parking lots designated for their own use.

Turning our backs and hoping the problem will correct itself is not a viable solution.

There are many areas just off Main Street and the square that could be used for additional parking. Perhaps the owners of these would be willing to lease or sell these areas. With signs identifying their locations, they could greatly increase consumer participation in Edgefield businesses. Perhaps, there could be a gated location for business owners and employees only, thus freeing up many spaces on Main Street and the square.

We need to look to the time when the buildings on the south side of the square are rehabilitated and ready for occupancy. Without expanding the footprint of our downtown as of this writing there are thirteen spaces, that are either rentable or would be after repairs. With all of these spaces rented, Edgefield would be the envy of every small town in South Carolina.

Edgefield needs more quality businesses for the convenience of our citizens and to attract visitors. To accomplish this we need more parking for vehicles of all types.

The time to act is now, let's begin.
