County Councilman derides coverage of meetings and accusations made by
print media
web posted July 13, 2010
Dear Editor,
I would like to clear up a misunderstanding that has occurred regarding
the Edgefield
County Council Meeting on July 6, 2010. First of
all, the way that the article in last week's papers were composed one
can easily assume that I apologized to Mike Reed for accusing him of
getting “kickbacks” for his involvement in the Calliham Project.
This was was not the case as I was the one being accused of claiming
that he was getting “kickbacks.”
During the meeting Mr. Reed approached the podium he stated that I had
mentioned that there were “others” who said he was getting
“kickbacks.” As this was very different from the initial
accusation, it was not what some witnesses at the meeting wanted to
hear.
As Mr. Reed and I conversed, my apology to him mentioned in the paper
was for whatever misunderstanding there may have been between us. It
was explained at the meeting that I had no recollection of making such
a statement. I guess that if you were to only inventory the order of
events and report them without the full context, one can report the
facts but not tell the full truth.
While both are true, regarding the accusation against me and the
apology, without the details that I am providing now one would tend to
be convinced that through the apology I was admitting that the
accusation was true.
I was and still am of the mind that Mike Reed was not receiving illegal
compensation for his duty on the new county building. I cannot however,
fathom why I would be attacked as I was on the night of the council
meeting. I believe that I am a very objective person and as such
understand that people may have reasons for doing the things they do
which I may not understand.
Rodney Ashcraft
Edgefield County Council District 2
Editor's
note: Edgefield Daily correctly quoted all parties involved and
Mr. Reed's admission that Councilman Ashcraft never leveled the charges
County Administrator Alton Brown accused him of making.
