Writer Seeks "Leader" in Fight Against Assessor's Increased Property Values

web posted July 21, 2011

Dear Editor,
I, like everyone else was stunned at the reassessment of my property in Edgefield County. For example, I bought a piece of land full of gullies and a beaver swamp 10 months ago for $1220 per acre for hunting purposes in a depressed market, land prices have fallen more since then. Would you believe the assessment is about twice that according to the Tax  Assessor?

This land is not worth this price at this time, maybe in ten years, if the economy comes back!  I would like to sell the property for the price of the assessment, however, I bet the county wouldn’t buy it for even 25% less than their assessment.

In  fact, I’ll sell it to the county for their price and they can make a profit. The house I live in has been assessed at twice the amount it would bring, according to a real estate friend of mine.

I, like everyone else am fed up! We need a leader to come forward and fight this mess. Somebody take the reins please? I would do it but I’m getting too old and at my age and heart condition, I don’t need the stress!

Isn’t it time the Edgefield County residents banded together, had a meeting and raised some hell about this outrageous assessment in these hard times.

I am drawing Social security now and it won’t be too long before older folks won’t be able to live if this keeps up! I came here 38 years ago, one reason being the low tax base, I’m considering leaving now! Somebody call the meeting and I’ll be there. We need a leader!
