Writer Expresses Gratitude for Community Support of Dixie Youth Team
web posted August 2, 2012
In all my years of coaching youth baseball I've never witnessed the
amount of community support our Edgefield All-Star team recently
enjoyed during its run to the Dixie Youth Baseball State Tournament.
Starting with the parents, who were always there when we needed help,
we simply would not have experienced this level of success.
From Jennifer Godfrey who handled our uniforms, transportation and
served as our team "Mom", to Joel and Susan Jolly who made generous
cash donations. Jon Prince supplied our team with a covered
trailer when it became apparent we would need to take enough gear,
drinks and supplies for at least 4 days. Nick Wates and Scott Mims
played instrumental roles in the success of this trip. These men not
only made the trip to Florence but scheduled meals for our team and did
a great job making sure our equipment and drinks were in the dugout
prior to game time.
I would like to thank the dozens of individuals who donated money and
bought raffle tickets for our gun give-away. Our local businesses also
contributed generously. Pendarvis Chevrolet, Herlong Ford,
Edgefield Fuel Supply, Brad Kovar and Heritage Hardware all made
substantial donations. The National Wild Turkey Federation provided a
suburban for transportation and several other items throughout the
The Town of Edgefield was kind enough to allow us to hold our "Meet the
Team" night on the square, thanks to Mayor Ken Durham and the entire
Town Council. David Coleman and his crew are to be commended for their
help throughout the season and for the way they kept the fields
maintained during our practice weeks leading up to the tournament.
I would also like to thank Richard Wates and Dean Childress, who
coached our team with dignity and class. Dixie Youth Baseball is one of
the few remaining youth baseball organizations that still promotes the
Christian faith and strives to instill a sense of community pride in
its players. Coach Wates ended each practice and game with a word of
prayer and for this, I'm truly grateful.
I would be remiss if I failed to mention Edgefield Daily and the
opportunity they give our league each year. Since we began submitting
features to Edgefield Daily, I've heard numerous times how much our
parents and players appreciate reading about the games on line.
The success our team enjoyed this summer didn't happen overnight. It
began years ago in backyards and on baseball fields throughout our
county with not much more than a bat, a glove, a ball and a dream. For
several Edgefield County youth, that dream became a reality this
season, which without the support of this community, would not have
happened. The number of people who helped this team prevents me from
listing each of you by name, but know that our players, coaches and
parents all appreciate your support.
