Chess Coach thanks supporters
web posted August 5, 2010
Dear Editor,
Recently, when South Carolina Female
Scholastic Chess Champion, Tori
Whatley, asked the community for financial assistance to attend the
prestigious Susan Polgar Girls Invitational Tournament, they responded
by opening their purses and wallets even in the face of the toughest
economic times since the Great Depression. Together, local businesses
contributed half of the funds necessary for Tori and I to drive to the
event in Lubbock, Texas.
This show of support is indicative, not only of the pride in our
community and state, but also of our desire to reward and promote
excellence in our youths.
I explained, and Tori clearly understood, that although it was her
skill, tenacity, and talent that earned her a Champion’s Invitation, it
was a Championship Community of friends, family, and businesses that
delivered her to the tournament. I reminded her of this by writing the
names of each contributor on her scorebook. One of the other state
champions asked her who were all the names written on her scorebook.
Tori’s two-word answer said it all, “My team”.
I’d like to acknowledge Windsor Jewelers. Monterrey’s Mexican
Restaurant, the Citizen News, Field’s Insurance, Petal Pushers, C&M
Repair, Cash Ready ATM, Whatley Construction, and Cohn’s Concessions
for their efforts in helping Tori move South Carolina to its highest
finish yet in the state’s three year association with the event.
We are also appreciative of the many that encouraged us and wished us
well.
I would also like to thank all of you who support student activities,
be it academic, sports, or band related. Your decision to contribute to
these extracurricular programs demonstrates your belief in our youth
and their worthiness as an investment in our future.
