Writer angered over opinion column
web
posted August 15, 2009
Dear Editor,
Reading your (Editor's
column) on John Pettigrew reminded me of one of my
children throwing a fit in Walmart simply because they didn't get a
toy. In one breath you make mention of how your internet
publication is the most read of any news source in the county, yet you
continue to step across the line in regards to your personal
feelings. And by doing so, you take journalistic liberties not
considered by most readers to be fair or balanced. Granted, you
do a superb job of getting the "latest" news to your readers in a
timely fashion, yet by using your position to publicly humiliate those
individuals like Mr. Pettigrew, you remove yourself from comparison
with Edgefield's other news sources.
Honestly, I can't understand why you would be so offended by Mr.
Pettigrew attempting to omit Edgefield Daily from knowing of his
resignation. For several months you've publicly taken his
departments short comings to task and placed all of the blame squarely
on his shoulders. Right or wrong, your writings were no doubt
hurtful to Mr. Pettigrew, his family and his many friends and
supporters in Edgefield County. In addition, instead of simply
taking Mr. Pettgrew to task over the Bettis Park fiasco, has anyone
thought about placing some of this blame on the individual who runs the
County Recreation?
When my family and I first moved to Edgefield 9 years ago, Mr.
Pettigrew was one of the first folks to speak to me. He welcomed me to
Edgefield and offered to help my family get settled. Later on he
loaned me his copy of a very valuable book by General Pete Longstreet,
a native of Edgefield County. Mr. Pettigrew was always available
to answer questions about Edgefield or to point us in the right
direction. Your personal attacks on the man anger
me.
In conclusion I would like to add that I've often been impressed by
your investigative skills and that I consider Edgefield Daily to be a
valuable resource for the citizens of Edgefield County. Your hardwork
is evident in each viewing and the number of readers you enjoy
obviously supports this fact. However, I also feel that it's time
for the personal attacks to be toned down. Surely you understand
that your readers are smart enough to decide what's in their best
interest and Edgefield County without the name calling.
