Letter

Jane Dyer laments lack of leadership and civility
web
posted September 12, 2009
Editor,
I am embarrassed and offended by Mr. Wilson’s behavior, not because I
am a Democrat, but because I am an American and a South
Carolinian. When our elected officials are so crudely partisan
and seek only political advantage instead of dealing with an issue as
important and serious as providing affordable and effective health care
for our people, it is time to change those officials.
The past few months have been painful enough as we watched our great
state’s reputation dive for the gutter. I have worked
across the U.S., and I have heard firsthand the jokes aimed at South
Carolina.
First, our anti-job creating, anti-stimulus, anti-effective governor
makes us the object of ridicule throughout the country by
not understanding that a Governor has responsibilities 24/7. He
cannot just take off on a boondoggle, not inform his staff or his state
of his whereabouts, and then place his personal life above his duties.
Then, last night, one of our “Just say NO” Congressmen completely
embarrasses our entire state and country by showing a sheer lack of
respect for the Office of the President of the United States of
America. As a former Air Force Officer, I am offended and
surprised to see such a lack of self-discipline, control and sheer
unpatriotic contempt.
South Carolina is not the only state that is desperately in need
of creating jobs. Other states are doing everything possible to
bring new industry to their states, while we are continuously becoming
less and less credible because of the behavior of our elected officials.
We have great people, magnificent resources and embarrassing elected
officials. It is past time for us to elect leadership that takes
our states problems seriously, is committed to working on solutions and
will restore the tarnished reputation of our great state.

world. Married to John Dyer, a decorated Air Force fighter pilot,
they have raised four children. She grew up in Pickens
County and currently resides in Powdersville, SC.
